THERAPY DOGS ​

Therapy dogs and their owners provide entertainment, comfort, and support to people of the community on a volunteer basis. Owners may choose to visit hospitals, schools, assisted living facilities, care homes, or rehabilitation centers alongside their beloved pet companions. Therapy dogs must have impeccable social skills, enjoy interacting with humans, seek out attention, and be on their best behavior during visits. 

CLASS REQUIREMENTS 

In order to participate in the K9ology Therapy Dog program dogs must have successfully taken part in the following classes. 

 

  • K9 Star Puppy (optional)

  • K9 Citizen (mandatory) 

  • K9 Control (mandatory) 

  • Community K9 (mandatory) 

 

Exceptions will only be made if dogs and owners have partaken in private lessons with K9ology which have introduced training concepts and commands covered in these classes. 

SKILL REQUIREMENTS 

  • Dog must be sociable and adaptable in a variety of circumstance and environments. 

  • Owner/Handler has taught dog to generalize training concepts to a variety of environments, so that the dog can consistently perform wherever they go. 

  • Owner/Handler maintains control over the dog at all times. This includes being pro-active about rewarding the dog for good behavior, and interrupting or redirecting the dog before unwanted behavior escalates. 

  • Dog is not stressed, aggressive, fearful, or anxious around other dogs and people. 

DISQUALIFICATIONS 

  • Persistent barking (frustration or for attention) 

  • Stressed, anxious, or avoidant of new environments

  • Lack of social facilitation or disinterest in strangers 

  • Lack of control by owner/handler 

  • Lack of impulse control / inappropriate prey behavior 

  • Poor toilet training 

  • Participants may not be active members of another therapy dog organization

OBEDIENCE & PERFROMANCE REQUIREMENTS 

Dogs must be able to reliably perform the following obedience commands and behaviors in at least 3 environments to partake in visits:

 

  • Name / focus

  • Sit

  • Down

  • Stand 

  • Stay

  • Wait

  • Leave it

  • Come 

  • Loose lead walking 

  • Heel / Finish 

  • Place 

  • Settle down 

  • Stay around multiple dogs 

  • Walking while owner holds something 

  • Walking while person holding something approaches 

  • Polite greetings to visitors (sit or stand on approach)
